News Updates April 15, 2012

Hello All!  I have been having a harder time keeping this site updated than expected, so sorry for the old news continually on here.  Here is a quick peek at what we've been doing in our expedition:

Keep your eyes and ears open for the upcoming reappearance of frogs and toads (yes, the weather is too cold today!)  K students have been recording what they see and hear in their field journals.  Make sure you write or draw what you hear to add to our class graph!

Practicing MN frog calls!  Every day or so, we listen to recordings of 7 different frog and toad species to prepare for our field work to the pond.  Visit the Minnesota DNR website to listen to these calls at home. Click here:  DNR Frog Calls

On Friday, 2nd grade Noah and his mom came to visit us and share their pet, a White's tree frog.  We learned that these frogs need food, water and warm temperatures to survive.  Then we put on our scientist tool belts equipped with magnifying glasses, pencils and our field journals for a trek to the pond.  No frogs this time, we determined it was too cold, but maybe next time!

Keep your eyes peeled for more frog updates soon, and check out our Upcoming Events section for volunteer opportunities and special occasions!

Language Philosophy
Just like the rest of the K-3 team, we will use the Daily 5 CAFE to learn reading. This is a  classroom structure that teaches positive reading habits and fosters independence in even the youngest readers.  CAFE stands for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. Reading strategies are taught in each of these categories through mini-lessons and reinforced through individual conferences and goal setting.

To begin, we will learn to read to ourselves by reading either the pictures or the words in good fit spots for 2 minutes. We will build our reading stamina each day until we can read independently for 10 minutes! I will send more information on Daily 5 home in the weeks to come, but if you want to learn more now, visit  http://www.thedailycafe.com/
